Restaurants that earn the DiRōNA Achievement of Distinction in Dining include all cuisines across the United States, Canada and Mexico in three distinct categories: Timeless Traditional, Creative Contemporary, and Legendary Landmark. These categories represent a wide variety of dining experiences, from “white tablecloth, white glove” service to casual, down-home dining. What distinguishes them all is a commitment to quality—the hallmark of our member restaurants.

Fewer than 800 restaurants have earned the right to call themselves a DiRōNA restaurant and display the Achievement of Distinction in Dining. To qualify, a restaurant must meet or exceed our exceptional standards, including passing a rigorous and anonymous third-party inspection that evaluates ambience, cuisine, service and check accuracy, among other criteria. Only those who pass on all levels are offered DiRōNA membership.

History of DiRōNA

It's been said that "What's past is prologue," and it is certainly true that

no organization can know where it's going, unless it understands where it's come from. DiRoNA is no exception. Fortunately, through the good offices of one of our founders, John Arena, we are privy to the story of how "Distinguished Restaurants of North America" came to be, more than 20 years ago...

First, a bit of background...

Holiday was an American travel magazine published from 1946 to 1977. Originally published by the Curtis Publishing Company, Holiday's circulation grew to more than one million subscribers at its height. Curtis sold Holiday to the publisher of Travel, a competing magazine in the 1970s, and the two publications merged to form Travel Holiday.

A much-anticipated annual tradition with Holiday and also Travel Holiday were the Dining Awards. For more than 30 years, these awards were presented to the top restaurants in North America, and restaurant owners coveted their inclusion among the "best of the best" and proudly displayed an Award to that effect, usually by the front door. The sidebar to this story tells how the Dining Awards came to fruition, through the vision of DiRoNA Hall of Fame member, the legendary Ella Brennan.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Incoming Board Chair takes reins

Greetings to all-DiRoNA award recipients, sponsors and partners, industry and media representatives, and discriminating diners across North America!

On behalf of our Board of Directors, and as the incoming Board Chair, I am pleased to take the reins of this outstanding organization of distinguished restaurants. For more than 20 years, DiRoNA has provided consumers and industry professionals with the means to recognize and to patronize the "best of the best"-restaurants that have passed a rigorous independent inspection and that exemplify the finest attributes and experiences in the dining industry.

For those of you whom I haven't yet met, I was raised in the restaurant business. As many of you know, I am the owner of DiSalvo's Station Restaurant, a 350-seat dining and entertainment complex housed in a 1903 Latrobe, Pennsylvania historic landmark. Some years ago, I had the privilege of serving as president of the Pennsylvania Restaurant Association, and I learned a great deal about our industry in that role. My involvement in DiRoNA began nearly ten years ago, with the 2003 Annual Conference in Montreal. I've attended every conference since then, and during the intervening years, I've participated at a variety of levels, serving on and leading DiRoNA committees. I like to think of myself as the ultimate "team player"-for three years, I've served as your First Vice-Chair, giving me a unique opportunity to observe the dynamics of the organization. I am deeply honored to be your Chair for the next two years, and will do my utmost to see that we succeed in our mission of serving as the authority for recognizing and promoting excellence in dining.

As we build on past successes, plan new initiatives, increase our visibility and establish greater value for those who participate in the DiRoNA experience, we must be innovative, timely, and committed to the best our industry has to offer. Help me help you! We have work to do-and I can't do it without your participation.
