Growing up in Texas, captivated by the fragrance of mesquite smoke and beef on an open grill, Mark Bohanan harbored a dream to someday open a classic steakhouse that served the best beef in the state. And that’s what he did in 2002, renovating the second floor of a fine old building on a downtown street in San Antonio, a block from the city’s famous Riverwalk.
“The first day I walked the space that is now Bohanan’s, I resolved to preserve the original floor during the renovation. The heart pine floorboards are quarter-sawn in eighteen-foot lengths… you just can’t find flooring like that anymore. Built in the late 1800s, our building has housed a gentlemen’s haberdashery, shoe store, millinery shop, ladies fine clothier and an architecture firm.
